About Professor Higgins

Professor Eleanor Higgins is a Consultant Dermatologist on the specialist register of the Irish Medical Council. She has dedicated her career to research, education and the delivery of expert and patient-centred care. Her expertise includes all aspects of medical and cosmetic dermatology.

MEDICAL TRAINING

Professor Higgins graduated with honours from the National University of Ireland Galway in 2006.

She was ranked first in her class in medicine and was awarded Gold Medals in Medicine, Ophthalmology and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Professor Higgins completed specialist training in Dermatology in Ireland and was awarded the O’Loughlin Gold Medal in Dermatology for first place in the National Dermatology Trainee exam.

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP

On completion of her Dermatology Specialist Training, Professor Higgins moved to London to undertake sub-specialty training at the world-renowned St. John's Institute of Dermatology, Guys and St. Thomas' Hospital London.

She completed the highly competitive 1-Year Senior Clinical Fellowship in Medical Dermatology and Therapeutics.

CONSULTANT DERMATOLOGIST

On completion of her clinical fellowship, she was appointed as a Consultant Dermatologist at the St John's Institute of Dermatology, Guys and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London in 2015.

She spent the next 4 years as a consultant dermatologist in medical and general dermatology at the  St. John's Institute.

She gained world-class expertise in the management severe inflammatory dermatoses (eczema, psoriasis), autoimmune blistering conditions, photobiology and connective tissue disorders. She was actively involved in clinical research within the service.

MEDICAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INTERESTS

Professor Higgins is an Associate Clinical Professor at University College Dublin.

Professor Higgins has a special interest in medical education and was awarded distinction on completion of her Masters of Science in Medical Education from Queens University Belfast.

During her time as a consultant at the St. John’s Institute of Dermatology, Professor Higgins was lead for Postgraduate Education in Dermatology.

She established and was Director of the St John's DermAcademy. Along with her her colleagues, she delivered multiple successful educational courses to GPs, Dermatologists and Nurses across all aspects of Dermatology.

She was Course Director of the internationally recognised MSc in Clinical Dermatology at King’s College London.

She has published her work in peer-reviewed journals and has frequently presented at national and international scientific meetings.
